BP has shut in 100,000 barrels per day of oil production at its 400,000-bpd Prudhoe Bay field in Alaska after a water pipe leak, it was learned Wednesday.

The oilfield is America’s largest and “a few days” stop could impact oil prices, which have hovered between $66 and $70 a barrel.

The Associated Press in Alaska reported the news Tuesday, saying London-based BP identified the problem as a 12-inch pipe collecting water separated from produced oil and gas.

The AP report said the shutdown was disclosed late Monday by a politician critical of the company's maintenance practices in Alaska, where two leaks occurred last year.

BP confirmed the shutdown this morning early Wednesday.
