The start-up in Guelph Canada of a biofuels plant using wood to produce the energy per year of 550 barrels of oil was simultaneously reported Tuesday at the World Biofuels Markets day in Brussels and at the PowerGen Renewable Energy & Fuels Conference in Las Vegas.

Dynamotive Energy Systems Corp. has been building the plant for 11 months to employ its patented “fast-pyrolysis process”. The plant will produce 175 tonnes of biofuel from 200 tonnes of biomass, and unlike ethanol or biodiesesl, industry is the target market.

Industrial fuels account for 25 percent of greenhouse emissions, according to the European Union.

The BioOil produced at the $16.5 million plant is derived from heating wood chips (without oxygen) into a liquid and char.”

BioOil pumps, ignites and burns when atomized and “can be used by industrial customers with little adjustments necessary to combustion equipment”, a statement said.
