Drilling, logs and fluid tests tell Tullow Oil that a “high impact” light-oil discovery has been made at the Mahogany-1 exploration well in the West Cape Three Points licence offshore the Republic of Ghana.

The 3,683-metre-deep well was drilled from atop 1,300m of water. A hydrocarbon column 270 metres long yielded 95 metres of net pay.

More oil is hoped for in deeper strata and drilling is set to continue in the “Santonian turbidite stratigraphic trap”, which could open up the Tullow-operated Tano license.

Mahogany helps fulfil a seven-year exploration agreement after 1,076 square kilometres seismic shot in 2005.
