Nigerian gunmen ended an uneasy truce early Wednesday and attacked an oil platform at Soku island off the oil rich Niger Delta, taking five people hostage.
The Shell installation was apparently attacked by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, and the five oil workers kidnapped were two New Zealanders, one Australian, one Venezuelan and one Lebanese, Reuters reported, citing industry sources.
Reports put Nigerian production down fromp 150,000 to 700,000 barrels per day, attacks on personel and pipeline infrastructure forces slowdowns and oil-company evacuations.
