Scottish Power and Hammerfest Strøm have signed an agreement to develop Norwegian technology and tidal energy in the UK, with Statoil as lead shareholder in new venture.

The new Hammerfest Strøm UK will build a full-scale tidal energy turbine for installation by 2009. It’s seen as a first step toward mass production of the generation technology.

Statoil and Hammerfest Strøm installed a prototype tidal energy turbine in Kval Sound near Hammerfest, northern Norway, in 2003.

It was said to be the first in the world to supply power to the commercial power grid.
